From their first debut back in 1974, People Magazine has laid out spreads featuring products from Top list brands, as well as celebrities. From the new Kardashian Beauty line to Beyonce's perfume Heat. People Magazine has always found a way to broadcast 'celebs' products all while gaining huge attention for it. With 46.6 million views, People is the only magazine with the largest audience of an American Magazine. Every other page of the magazine features different products from different brands; sometimes even including little samples. In a special issue, Us Magazine had a whole 2 page spread on a new collection from Banana Republic that featured new fall clothing trends. They showcased the product and linked wardrobe that was similar to the real product but much cheaper. If all magazines did the same, then it would be much harder for them to gain the attention that they want. In many ways, Magazines have been advertising more than entertaining. Entertainment isn't a big factor for them, at least not anymore. Before high tech devices such as Apple Products and Dr. Dre Beats, magazine editors were focused on the entertainment of the reader, which is the main point as to why they were created. But now the main purpose of them is to gain attention from the products they promote and help venders get their products noticed in a way that is efficient to them. Advertising in magazines has become a blind spot to the audience. They are so used to the 4 page spread containing various clothing, along with beauty care products that they are less likely to spend time reading about the latest stories from celebs and more time on "whats hot and what's not". In 2011, People magazine had $997 million in advertising revenue. It was the highest advertising revenue of any American made magazine. The magazine was also ranked #6 on "Advertising ages annual 'A-list" in October of 2006. From then on, the views sky rocketed leaving People Magazine the most viewed Magazine in 2007 after it showcased celebrities wearing designer clothing within a day of the Golden Globes. Advertisement has become an ordinary thing for our generation today because society has grown so fond to it, as if it were always this way. But then again, without advertisements, it would be hard to keep up with latest entertainment that has now become very popular in our time.

  1. Aaliyah, there is a lot of good stuff in this. I particularly like and appreciate your use of quantitative evidence. You make it very clear that People relies on advertising revenue. You and Shannon are the only two students so far - I think - that have actually linked ads to revenue. This is very convincing. In future posts, please cite your source. I also like the specific details that you include. This is, no doubt, a strength of yours. You have a very colorful and engaging style.

There are technical issues that you need to address. As I have recommended to many of your classmates, I recommend that you have someone proof read your posts before you submit them. For example, look at this sentence: "With 46.6 million views, People is the only magazine with the largest audience of an American Magazine." I'm not sure what this means. You might also consider breaking your response up into multiple paragraphs. Long paragraphs are tough for readers to read. You could have started a new paragraph with your sentence "In many ways, Magazines have been advertising more than entertaining." This was a logical break in your response.
