How often do you watch a TV show or
movie and you notice that one of the actors or actresses have something that is
popular in society like they are drinking a coke or have an iPhone? Well all
these things that might seem coincidental are not. Most of these producers are
purposely advertising these popular items to gain more fans for their own
media. On one show that I have been watching for some time called Pretty Little Liars, I have noticed that
towards the end of every show, a hashtag appears like a lightning bolt at the
end of my TV. Not only do I see the twitter updates but also four other
advertisements: certain brands of clothing, hairstyles, certain drinks and iPhone
usage.
It has come to my attention that
the producers of this TV show aren’t doing this accidentally. They know that
their audience tends to be teenage girls. Teenagers are usually the age where
kids start getting Twitter accounts. If your favorite show is using Twitter
then you have to, too right? This is the thinking process of producers
nowadays. At the end of every show, it will say something like “#teammona”. The
hashtag is relevant to the episode since it uses the climax. Once it is
broadcasted on the TV, one can go on twitter and see tweets about that episode.
Also this leads to other twitter accounts such as the actresses and actors in
the show. Twitter is a teenage media site that most people use so if this teenage
show is promoting a teenage site then it will not only be advertising the show
itself but the website as well.
Despite this big advertisement for
twitter, the show also promotes small things like iPhone, hairstyles, clothing,
and drinks. The four main girl characters tend to be drinking cokes which may
seem harmless but it is in there for a small advertisement. Also the audience
picks up on clothing and hairstyles of the characters. They realize that a lot
of the clothing the characters are wearing is from stores they shop at. In Pretty Little Liars, on commercials
between episodes or even in the show, they promote “TRESemmé” hair products. The
people watching this show will try these products and try styling their hair
like the characters from the show. The TV show is about four girls who are
getting tortured by a mysterious character known as “A” who is sending the
girls stalking texts. Now obviously every person in the show has an iPhone
because almost everyone has an iPhone. It is the “hot” item in society today.
Small advertisements in these shows
may seem like no big deal but what you may not be realizing is that these TV
shows are purposely making these ads. They want to be increasing the rate of their
fans and their main focus is not to entertain us.
Ava, I seem to remember that when I was a kid watching television, television shows never explicitly advertised products. However, contemporary television pitches products all the time. I wonder what inspired the change. Your observations are good. I'm glad that you identified how the entertainment and advertising industries have begun to use Twitter to accomplish their marketing objectives.
ReplyDeleteThere are several technical and stylistic issues I want to show you. First, in your first sentence you make a mistake that is common on the SAT. You write "one of the actors or actresses have something..." This is grammatically incorrect. You do not conjugate verbs based on nouns in prepositional phrases. The singular pronoun "one" needs the verb "has". You should have written "one of the actors or actresses has something." You also write that "producers are purposely advertising these popular items to gain more fans." Is this true. Do media outlets advertise to gain fans for sponsors?
Regardless, this post is good, but it could be better. I recommend trying to use more engaging verbs. You rely extensively on the verbs "to be" and "to have".
